Eckhart Tolle is a teacher and writer whose main focus is spirituality. His recent best-seller, A New Earth, landed him on The Oprah Winfrey Show. His visit inspired Oprah to proclaim the book one of her all-time favorites. She produced the first live, international, on-line class, featuring Tolle’s book. This “class” is a ten-week seminar designed to review and teach Tolle’s philosophy .
His book The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment, focuses on Tolle’s belief that being aware and being in the present moment opens the gateway to peace and happiness. Tolle’s teachings emphasize that the transformation of consciousness is the key to spiritual awakening. He believes that being spiritually aware is the way to create a more balanced and happier existence. Tolle's goal is to help people lead better lives and obtain inner peace. He also applies his philosophy to the concept of world peace. Tolle believes that if mankind were more in-tune with the now, then life on earth would be better.
Tolle was born in Germany 1948, but raised in Spain during the latter part of his childhood. He did not receive any kind of formal education after the age of thirteen. At the age of twenty, he ended up in England. After attending night school, he attended the University of London and Cambridge. Tolle suffered from Depression for many years. When Tolle was twenty-nine, he experienced a spiritual transformation that changed his life. This experience directed him into the world of counseling and teaching and ultimately to where he is today. Tolle is not a member of any particular religious group, but he has been influenced by mystic Islam, Rumi, Sufism and Zen Buddhism.
He has published several books, including: Stillness Speaks and Practicing the Power of Now. His first book, the Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment, was a New York Times best-seller and has been translated into thirty-three languages. Tolle is a popular public speaker and travels extensively throughout the world, giving lectures and conducting retreats. Many of his lectures are available on DVD and CD. Tolle has lived in Vancouver BC since 1996.
